Mohammed Kaif made his Test debut in May 2000 against South Africa at Bangalore and his One-day debut against England in January 2002 at Kanpur. His outstanding performance was noted when he helped India in its chase of 326 with his magnificent knock of unbeaten 87 against England in 2002, where he finally won the Man of the Match award. Mohammed Kaif came up with yet another dazzling performance in 2004 against Bangladesh series in all the 3 ODIs.

Most of his career, Mohammed Kaif found his place in the side on a replacement basis in place of injured players. In March 2006 in the first Test against England, Mohammed Kaif found the berth in the side in place of injured Yuvraj Singh. Despite his wonderful knock of 91 he was dropped again when Yuvraj became fit for the next game. Again Mohammed Kaif was selected to play in the West Indies in four Tests in place of injured Sachin Tendulkar; and he knocked a brilliant 148 not out - his maiden Test century. In late 2006, Mohammed Kaif was again dropped from the team giving room for Dinesh Karthik.
